Whiten your Yellow Pillows (Step by Step)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup powdered laundry detergent
  • 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
  • 1 cup bleach (or alternative bleach)
  • 1/2 cup borax

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Add the laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, and borax to the boiling water and stir until the powdered ingredients are dissolved. (You can also pour the water into a bucket and then add the dry ingredients, if you don’t want to mix the cleaning ingredients in a pot.)
  2. When the dry ingredients have dissolved in the water, pour the water into the washing machine (or wherever you plan to soak your pillows) along with the bleach. Next, leave the pillows to soak for about 30 minutes. Halfway through the soaking time, turn them over to make sure they soak well.
  3. Once soaked, put the pillows through the full wash cycle of the washing machine. If possible, select the second rinse option.
  4. If you have down pillows, put them in the dryer on the “fluff” or “air” setting. Synthetic pillows can be tumble dried on a low heat. Add a couple of tennis balls or homemade dryer balls to the dryer to help fluff up your pillows as they dry.

Do you have old pillows? How to make them look like new

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • Clothes detergent
  • laundry booster

Instructions

  1. Put your old pillows in the washing machine and soak them. Washing in pairs balances the washer so they clean evenly. Add the hydrogen peroxide and vinegar to the drum of the washing machine. (Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleach, and vinegar tackles deep stains.)
  2. Once the soak cycle is complete, wash the pillows with your usual liquid detergent along with a wash booster. The washing enhancer improves the capacity of the detergent and cleans the pillows in depth. You can use your favorite brands or try making your own.
  3. Take the pillows out of the washing machine and put them in the dryer. Once dry, you can now enjoy some fresh white pillows!

How to clean a mattress with stubborn stains

This solution will help you remove the tough stains left by the previous method.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon of liquid soap.

Instructions

  1. Mix well and pour into a spray bottle.
  2. Spray onto the surface of the stain and let sit 20 minutes or so.
  3. Towel dry and brush as much as you can and let dry.
  4. Repeat the operation if necessary.
  5. The baking soda helps absorb stains and odors, while the peroxide helps lighten the look of stains.

Bonus tip:  Placing the mattress in the sun and lightly misting it with lemon juice will also help to lighten stains.

How to wash a pillow by hand or machine

Ingredients

  • Mild, low foaming detergent
  • Washing machine or deep sink

Instructions

  1. Remove pillow protector (using a zippered protector plus pillow cover helps keep pillows cleaner).
  2. Fill the sink or washing machine with very hot water. Hot water kills dust mites without the need for bleach or other harsh chemicals.
  3. Add mild, low-sudsing detergent (I used Woolite).
  4. Add the pillow and shake.
  5. Rinse several times.
  6. Squeeze excess water from the pillow with a white terry towel. If the pillow is made of feathers, do not twist or wring it, as this will break the feathers.
  7. Throw your pillow in the dryer and let it air dry, or hang it to air dry. Remove it by hand or put a few clean tennis balls in the dryer.
