Sliced Baked Potatoes, often referred to as Hasselback Potatoes, are a visually appealing and delicious twist on the traditional baked potato. Originating from Sweden, where they were first served at the Hasselbacken Hotel in Stockholm, this dish has gained international popularity for its unique presentation and flavor.
The preparation of Sliced Baked Potatoes involves taking small to medium-sized potatoes, preferably firm varieties like Yukon Gold or Russet, and making thin, parallel slices along each potato. The key is to cut the slices about three-quarters of the way down, ensuring that the potato remains intact at the bottom and the slices are held together. This technique allows the potato to fan out slightly during cooking, creating its characteristic appearance.
Before baking, the potatoes are seasoned to enhance their flavor. Each slice is carefully brushed with melted butter or olive oil, which not only adds richness but also helps the edges of the potato slices crisp up in the oven. Seasonings such as salt, pepper, minced garlic, and herbs like rosemary or thyme are sprinkled over and between the slices. Some variations also include brushing the potatoes with a mixture of melted butter and herbs or garlic for added flavor.
The potatoes are then baked in a preheated oven. As they cook, the slices begin to separate and fan out, creating space for the heat to penetrate and crisp up the edges of each slice. The baking time varies depending on the size of the potatoes but generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The potatoes are done when they are golden and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Sliced Baked Potatoes are often served as a side dish and can be accompanied by a variety of toppings. Popular choices include sour cream, shredded cheese, chives, or bacon bits, allowing each diner to customize their potato to their liking.
This dish is not only flavorful but also visually striking, making it an excellent choice for special occasions or to elevate an everyday meal. The contrast between the crispy edges and the soft, fluffy interior of the potato, combined with the customizable toppings, makes Sliced Baked Potatoes a versatile and beloved dish.
